ANV has arranged for a private tour of the Arlington House, the former home of General Robert E. Lee. Its grounds were selected as the site of Arlington National Cemetery during the Civil War and the site was designated a national memorial in respect of General Lee and his efforts during Reconstruction. Our tour will be led by a National Park Ranger who will highlight the history and features of the home, the life of General Lee and his family, and many other aspects of the memorial. The tour will take approximately one hour. Lunch to follow at a local restaurant for those who are interested.
You can get to the Arlington House either on foot from the Arlington National Cemetery Visitor Center up the hill to the mansion (approximately 20 minute walk from the Center, mainly uphill) or by taking the tram. Tram tickets are available at the Visitor Center for $9.00 for seniors (65+) or $12.00 for adults. Persons with valid handicapped placards can ride the tram for free along with one companion. A tram ticket entitles the rider to hop-on and hop-off all day at any of the six stops along the route. Allow yourself 20 minutes to take the tram from the Center to Arlington House. ANV will also arrange for members who have special needs to drive directly to the Arlington House. Please notify the ANV Office no later than December 6 with details on the vehicle make and license plate number along with passengers’ names. Note: Accessing the upper floors of Arlington House involves climbing stairs. Parking is available at the Visitor Center for $1.75 per hour up to three hours and then $2.50 each hour thereafter.
Please RSVP by December 9 by email at email@example.com or by calling the office at 703-509-8057 – be sure to include the name of the event and number in your party. Also, please indicate if you will be driving and can take a passenger, or if you need transportation. We will organize carpooling, if necessary.
Open to members and volunteers.
